Upcoming Tour – Brandy Station, Aldie, Middleburg, & Upperville, & 2nd Winchester

Multi- day Cavalry Tour to be held May 20-22, 2022.

We will be based in Winchester for this event. Each day’s tour will begin and end in Winchester. Friday, May 20, 2022: We will tour sites associated with the Battle of Brandy Station, including Kelly’s Ford, the site of St. James Church, Stevensburg, the Graffiti House, the Culpeper National Cemetery, and, of course, the main battlefield itself. Eric Wittenberg will be your guide. Lunch is provided. This tour will include quite a bit of walking–including climbing a steep hill–so please plan and prepare accordingly.

Saturday, May 21, 2022: We will tour sites associated with the cavalry battles that occurred in the Loudoun Valley of Virginia this day. Specifically, we will see the Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville battlefields, as well as the Goose Creek Bridge battlefield site. We will also pass through Rector’s Crossroads, where Jeb Stuart’s expedition began on June 23. The day’s final stop will be at the Winchester visitor’s center. Bob O’Neill, the authority on all things associated with these battles, will be our primary guide, although Eric will assist. Lunch is provided. There will not be as much walking involved in this tour.

Sunday, May 22, 2022: We will tour a variety of sites associated with the Second Battle of Winchester, including Pritchard’s Hill at Kernstown, the Star Fort, Stevenson’s Depot, Bunker Hill, WV, and a variety of other sites. This will not be a full day tour. Eric’s co-author, Scott Mingus, will co-lead this tour with Eric. Lunch is NOT provided for this day since the tour will end by 1:00 or so. Walking on this tour will be minimal. There are two ways to register for this tour:

  1. You can register for the entire event and get a discount for doing so. The cost to register for the entire event is $350.00.
  2. You can register for individual days. The cost to register for Friday or Saturday only is $150.00 per day, and the cost to register for Sunday only is $120.00.

Please use the link here to register and pay. Snacks and drinks will be provided all three days.

Registration is limited to 53 on Friday and 52 on Saturday and Sunday. The event will be canceled if we do not receive at least 40 registrations per day. Registrations must be completed by May 5, 2022. Cancellations after May 10 will be at 50% of the amount paid.

As this event will take place during graduation season, we were unable to block rooms in Winchester, so you will be on your own to reserve a room. Your lodging is NOT included in the cost of registration, so please plan accordingly.

This is going to be an excellent event that should go a long way to helping you to better understand the events discussed in the first volume of Scott’s and my forthcoming 2-volume Savas Beatie series, titled, If We are Striking for Pennsylvania: The Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac March to Gettysburg. Volume 1, which will be going to the printer shortly, covers all these events, as its scope is June 3-22, 1863. We look forward to seeing you then and there!

  1. Someday I am going to have to do one of these. I haven’t done a battlefield tour with you since we were kids.
