My first book, The Cavalry Battles of Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville, has long been out of print, and secondary market prices now put copies beyond the reach of many prospective buyers. Shortly before we moved back to Virginia, I decided to re-write the book, in part to bring the story back at an affordable price.
Doing so also allowed me to correct small errors of fact, grammar, spelling, etc., that crept into the book and update the maps that had been created at the dawn of computer-generated map technology.
Beyond the small errors alluded to above, several major errors of fact and interpretation have come to light over the nearly 30 years since the late Harold Howard published the first edition. My decision to re-write the narrative and create new maps, rather than simply refresh them, has allowed me to bring the new story to light.
As the narrative nears completion, the folks at the Chambersburg Civil War Seminars and Tours (CCWS&T) have invited me to speak, via Zoom, on September 15, 2021. While I will discuss the battles, I plan to devote much of my presentation to explaining, in detail, the most important interpretative change in the story.

Bob, I have registered for your talk and am greatly looking forward to it. I think your book on the cavalry fights in the Loudoun Valley is the best Civil War cavalry book I have ever read. I have read it at least four times. I am eagerly looking forward to the new printing. I also have used your Blue and Gray article and your Gettysburg Magazine article a lot. My wife and I are going to visit the Loudon Valley in very early October, so this seminar is at a good time for me. Thank you for doing it.
Incidentally, when I acquired the Blue and Gray magazine with the Rosebud article in it, I was pleasantly surprised to see a photo of my dear friend Jessie Huffman. I have ridden over the battlefield several times with her and both Tommy Aldersons. You were spoken of very highly by them.
