I shy away from doing book reviews here and I am not going to offer anything in-depth now. Rather, I offer notice of the recent release of a very worthwhile Gettysburg title. The book has become a Gettysburg Classic. Indeed, Savas Beatie released this new edition for that very reason.
Jim McLean is a good friend and has been for many years. With the full disclosure matter out of the way, I mention the book, not just because he is a good friend but also because of the depth and quality of his research. As he explains in his introduction, he published the book himself in 1987, through his Butternut and Blue Book Shop. He then expanded the book and offered a second edition in 1994. By 2020, the book had been out of print for twenty years when Ted Savas suggested re-printing Jim’s study.
Jim refreshed the maps and expanded, as well as corrected the story based upon twenty years of additional research. Readers who especially appreciate maps will find a map on nearly every other page once you reach the heart of the narrative.
You will also find an interview with Jim McLean here, on Harry Smeltzer’s Bull Runnings blog, as well as a review here from the Civil War Books and Authors blog.
I saw the listing on this book and was intrigued but not motivated to buy it. But with your comments I think I will put it on my “to buy” list. Your opinion counts.
